Hi everyone,
I have a small update to the foraging. Ryan has made a little video showing the beginnings of the foraging skill. Unskilled players will see only the random forage on their first try. This means they collect whatever they can get but can’t specify the type of item. As they gain a bit more skill, they begin to unlock more buttons which allow them to search for specific things.
After clicking the forage button, the available choices will appear. After choosing and clicking, an animation will play and the item will appear in the inventory. We searched for a “looking on the ground” animation but didn’t find one so made one ourselves with our Xbox Kinect and some software, Cinema Mocap, which allowed us to record our motions and apply it directly to the Unity character. Ryan then blended this with the pick up animation and I think it looks pretty good! A far cry from games I have played where you stand perfectly still while you forage.
The UI is an example and not the one we will be using. Dennis is now knee deep in Unity’s fabulous new UI system. The icons as well are just stand-ins. We will start making icons later this week.
This is the video! We need to start a Youtube channel, huh? 🙂

He is showing you the forage skill as well as the new inventory system. Certain items will stack and you can destroy/drop directly from the inventory. More features will be added to support clothing/armor as well as more skills. The next skill for Ryan is cooking! A very original recipe system will be created. I think you will like it.
Here are a few more pictures. I am in the process of laying road, with Thom’s help, of course.
Enjoy and we will have some more for you later in the week.

Looks nice!
I guess the pignuts not stacking is just for demonstration purposes or are pignuts that big? 🙂
The animation looks great!
I certainly look forward to the cooking system, especially if you can cook amaranth!

Ha!! The pignut is a stand in for root. I am bugging my artist to do a root model so we can make an icon. Not everything will stack. Things that “compress” or bundle will stack, such as small sticks bundled as kindling or a stack of leaves or coins. Roots won’t bundle although you could put them in a sack and then into your inventory. The sack will still have the weight of the roots though so while it might save space it will still affect weight.
Amaranth was the first thing Ryan found so used it but I will make sure it is included in the cooking skill just for you! 🙂
Thanks so much for your comments.
