The Building of Caeril

Edit: The screenshots below are from an older version of the game. Please see the newer screenshots.

I have begun construction on the city of Caeril. According to the lore, Caeril is a great city created after a war lasting 100 years devastated the land.  A treaty was signed by all the rulers of the nations and a neutral zone was established. Included within this zone was a large trading city, Caeril. It was built by the people of Aryiure as a monument to peace and prosperity.

Caeril has to be something special. I didn’t want the typical northern European style and since Caeril is on the ocean and the climate is very moderate, I decided to draw from medieval styles in the Mediterranean.  I pulled out pictures from our trip of Venice, Verona, Burano, Dubrovnik, Croatia, and Naplion, Greece. I love the simple style of the buildings in these areas, the roofs covered with tile, the lovely windows, doors, and arches. Piazza’s break up the city allow space for socializing and markets. The cities are colorful and beautiful, all of which seem to suit Caeril very well.

I already new according to our lore Caeril has a canal, tall walls that surround the city, and a docks. After creating the canal, I spent a lot of time placing wall pieces to make it look more like a canal, less like a river. The Central District of Caeril will lie on one side of the canal while enclaves housing various people of each ethnic backgrounds will lie across the bridges.

I also created a platform with stairs that go up from the canal and market areas to the Central District of the city where the houses and shops are located.

I also created some concept ‘art’ to show our artists what I would like to see in the city. This picture is of a row of middle class houses.  There are three styles of houses, each one used in a random row. I actually placed two of these back to back in the picture with small gardens between them. I can imagine grander houses on a square courtyard and poorer houses and flats around a small piazza.

These will be passed along to the artists so they can create something similar. They will be used for player housing but I will leave how that will be done for later.

I am hoping that we can make Caeril look magnificent while also making it a playable city. I would very much appreciate your comments on these!

A blooper and mini-games!

Hi everyone,

I spent this evening looking through old Adellion art assets for some characters so I could actually place them in the world. I didn’t find very much but I did accidentally create a blooper….

A wooden giant?

A wooden giant?

I especially like the giant gun…its being held by a lovely medieval noblewoman..we can’t figure out how to unmount that silly thing! I think I will just delete it since I doubt we will need it again. Besides, when I switch to play mode to take pictures, I often hit the mouse button and shoot something! The noise scares me so much I almost leap out of chair! Don’t worry, we will replace the gun with a nice melee system. 🙂

Our next goal now that we have designed levels and we can log into the server and select a character is to create skills.  We have decided to make a series of mini-games, each one showcasing a set of skills.  We are thinking of a farming game, a tavern game (brewing and cooking), possibly hunting/healing, and a few others. The way our skills are organized, once we get a few done and working, the others should be much easier. By using mini-games, we can better focus on what is needed for each skill.

We still have a long ways to go but we are seeing progress. Dylan is creating a website and Teun and Brad are busy with music and art.  As for our characters, we have purchased a membership to a website that has promised us several models, including some that will make great Sakoian merchants!

If you have any great ideas for mini-games, feel free to to suggest them in the comments.  We want this to be fun for you as well as for us!

The joy of seeing your creations…

Edit: These screenshots are from an older version of the game. Please see the more recent pictures in later posts.

Today I sent a picture to one of our artists, a young man who is rather new to art and whose real life job is in the medical field. He picked up a 3d art program and found out he enjoyed making models and is making some things for Legends of Aryiure. Anyway, I sent him a screenshot of a bridge he made that I placed in the training area. It looked wonderful and I know it made him feel wonderful to see something he created, with his own hands, immersed in a lovely environment. What a great feeling! And it made me feel good to know that my screenshot made him feel good!

I come from a science background and never in a million years did I think I would be creating stories and lovely 3d environments.  Now, at 10 years old, I did write notebooks full of fictional stories so not so surprising that I would continue with my writing but that it would actually help to create a new world? No way..never would have believed it. 🙂 Of course computers back then were a black screen full of text.  We have come a long ways!

Here are some more pictures of the world Ryan and I are creating along with help from Dylan, Brad and Richard. Dennis comes along and cleans up our coding messes too. 🙂

Enjoy and don’t forget to comment! I am sure the ‘boys’ would love to hear comments about their work.

Hello!

I have wanted to create a blog for quite some time now but never really found the time to create one.  Lately though, I have felt as if I needed a place to just put down my thoughts and share it with those who are interested.

For the past ten years I have worked as writer for an indie video gaming company creating the lore for the game Adellion. This wasn’t a full time job and it wasn’t even a paying job, more like a hobby with a chance of payment at the end. I didn’t do it for the money and in fact, when offered a paying job on another game by another company, I discovered that I couldn’t get Adellion out of my head.  I fell in love with the lore, originally conceived by a man named James and his buddies. Later I became the Lead Writer and I was fortunate to work with some amazing writers.  The lore for Adellion went through a number of changes and barely resembles James’ initial concepts.  It covers multiple pages and many chapters. It contains descriptions of unique cultures, incredible stories, and places that become believable under the pen, or the keyboard in this case, of the writers. Unfortunately, the lore has never yet seen publication other than a book by one of the writers, Johan Pihl, about the pirates of the Paleyans.

As far as I know, Adellion will someday be made. The lore is done and at least until the game mechanics are done, there is little for me to do anymore.  For the past year, I have felt an increasingly larger hole growing in the space where Adellion used to be. Until now….

I have been lucky enough to find a couple of hardy souls that wish to create a new game, something different.  I took the idea to several people, about a game that uses the Adellion lore but is not quite as complex…..more player driven, less mechanics, and less like every other game out there. While Adellion has innovations, its still a game that focuses heavily on achievement through gaining experience and spending countless hours grinding, even if those hours are limited to two hours a day.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love the concept of Adellion. It will always be my dream game, just as it was when I first set eyes on Adellion’s website, and heard about James and Paul and the others.

So now I have a game to design. I will share the names of the other team members when I get their permission to do so because they are a huge part of this.  The game concept is not completely original since I do use some features from Adellion…how could I not? It is my dream game!  But I want a smaller game, one with fewer players, one that will allow more interaction between staff and players.  This is impossible in a game with 10,000 players and in-game interaction is limited when the world is over 300 square miles in size…without cars or airplanes or instant teleportation.  I want a game that builds in social networks without being just a chat game and allows players to change the world, not only in their small corner, but throughout the land.

So…here comes The Legends of Aryiure….well, that is the current name but it seems well liked so far.  The game will center around the city of Caeril and its environs about 100 years before the current Adellion time (at the start of the game).  It is a time when the world is still recovering from a 200 year war. The various nations of Aryiure are beginning to come out of their own dark ages.  Caeril, established as part of the Treaty of Erana, signed at the end of this long war, is prospering. People of all cultures have come here to live and with them they bring their own stories, songs, legends and their own problems as well as prejudices.

As a player, you will be able to live and breathe as a character in Caeril or one of the surrounding villages.  You will be a thriving member of society, contributing to the economy of the city or town, whether you choose to be a craftsman or woman, a mercenary fighter, a merchant, a politician or a myriad of other professions.  While Legends of Aryiure will not have as many skills as Adellion, it will have enough to please most players along with realistic medieval guilds and other organizations.  Of course, role playing is the reason for this game and it will be expected that all players stay in-character during game play except in private, just like Adellion.  The game will give players plenty of opportunities to create and implement their own stories in an immersive beautiful environment.

Anyway, all this is in the future and while I am dying to start a community for future fans, I have learned a lesson from Adellion and won’t put anything up until we have a nice start on the game for you. So you can follow me here and I will give news as it comes in. But we won’t put up forums yet and please don’t use the Adellion forums for this. If you would like to comment, please be responsible and mature.

Thanks for listening!
