Herds and Flocks

Sorry about the delay in updates but I have been working on something and wanted to share it with you. However, we had delays due to issues that needed to be solved. Anyway, I am ready now.

We have added herds to our game. This means we can have herds or flocks of animals that actually choose a leader and follow that leader.  If the herd grows too large, the animals will break into numerous herds, each one with a leader.  With Ryan’s help, we have put together several herds and will be making some changes to the scripts to make the herds more interesting and to fix a few flaws way movements and animations work together. The original script is from a developer on the Unity asset store, Unluck and the system is perfect for our game. I think you will like the end results.

We also created a new YouTube page just so we could show you videos of a few small herds and flocks. They can get bigger but for testing and modification purposes we kept them small for this first round.  Again, they are not perfect yet and the models are mostly prototype models. I made a few notes in the video.

I also included another video which is just a walk around the area, with some nice views of the growing village. The fields will be blended into the terrain through scripting that will allow them to look as they they are attached to the terrain, even though they are not.  This same blending can be used to blend other natural objects such as rocks and cliffs.  With the release of Unity 5, expected next month or soon after, we will be able to replace our Unity trees  with Speed Trees, which will allow us to use more trees, have greater variety, with better performance. The new 64bit editor will be nice as well, increasing our memory footprint for the game.

Anyway, here are the videos. Please subscribe to the Youtube channel and post comments.  Thanks and hope you all enjoy.  Be sure to put them in HD before you watch them!

Known issues: Can you spot the bloopers? If so, post them here!

There are number of known issues and I will address them in an addendum but I want to see what you can find. Consider it a game!

Farming Village and a peek at Character Creation.

I know I promised house building stages but I was distracted by fields this week so spent quite some time trying to figure out how to allow players to buy and place fields and grow crops that actually react to the wind.  Unity brushes won’t place on meshes and I really wanted the fields to be objects. This allows players control over where they will put them and how many they want, etc.  Also, I wanted to imitate the real ridge and furrow fields of medieval Europe. I will write a bit more about that in a later blog post.

I made a great start today and now my growing village sports a few fields and a few houses.  Hopefully we can add some sheep soon!  These are starter houses, although a few have optional add-ons. I am working on a slightly larger house with a wooden shingle roof.

ScreenShot1554 ScreenShot1553 ScreenShot1555

Dennis is continuing with the character creation. He has spent some time updating and cleaning up the code. Below is a ‘prototype’ of the character creation screen. I say prototype because it is not entirely filled in with all it’s parts yet…and no, I don’t mean the lady. 🙂 We do have to keep our PG rating, at least for now.

After you select the culture, you will see options such as hair style, skin tone and clothing at the bottom. Clicking on one of those will bring up choices, some unique to that culture. To the right, the panels will be expanded and you will find sliders you can manipulate to change height, weight, facial features, body part sizes, etc. Again, different choices will reflect slight differences between the cultures.

Character Creation2

Ryan has nothing to show us today but he is cleaning up his code in order to continue building skills and finishing the inventory. I have asked him to give me a few screenshots for the next update so hopefully soon!

Sorry this one was a little late but the houses took longer than expected.

Enjoy and please comment!

PS: The GUI artwork above is from Lamroot, on opengameart.org. This is great place to find lots of artwork for prototyping. Make sure you read the licenses carefully and give proper credit to the author.  We have a purchased GUI product as well but I think Lamroot’s artwork is awesome. It is perfect for a “window” into a medieval home.

Edit:

I did a little work on the fields and it looks a bit better. Wanderer had a great idea below in the comments so I will try that tomorrow.

Here is a new picture.

ScreenShot1557

Of course, Unity crashed when I tried do too much and ran out of memory. I can’t wait for Unity 5 and that 64 bit editor! 🙂  Oh well, didn’t lose much, just need to put the parts back together. Fortunately, I save a lot.

Little House on the Bloodlands…..

Hi everyone,

Another short update for you.  I have been working seriously on the housing for the game. We will begin with a small village on the rolling hills and meadows of the Bloodlands.  I made a few houses but just couldn’t get the feel I wanted. Then, quite by accident, I was looking through some assets I had in my folders and found the perfect house. It needed a bit of work.  I changed the base of the house, re-textured all of it but the roof and made the proportions a little better for my needs.

Here are the results:

ScreenShot1531

I added some props for atmosphere, a few stately oaks and set everything along the newly constructed road.  Behind the house you see three bee hives which produce honey for the family to sell to locals. A small garden full of plants and lovely flowers adorn the front yard.

This is the smallest of the houses, with only one room shared by the peasant family. I plan to use this house as a base for more houses, some of wattle and mud like this one and others of stone form the nearby quarry or even wood.  Larger houses or houses with additions will be available as well.

My next update, I will show the building stages of the house as well as a few more models. The thatch roof will need to be replaced every so often as it gets dark and moldy after a while.  Upkeep on a house will keep you busy or you can hire someone with skills to do it for you.

I have a few more lovely pictures I thought you might enjoy. In game, the grass and trees move with the wind. It is very nice but needs a few sheep, don’t you think?

ScreenShot1528

ScreenShot1530

ScreenShot1529

Oh, and one more…not in a pretty scene but can anyone guess who might live in this house?

ScreenShot1516

I will give you a hint…the roof is made of leaves! 🙂

Hope you enjoyed this brief but very scenic post!

Foraging and Inventory

Hi everyone,

I have a small update to the foraging.  Ryan has made a little video showing the beginnings of the foraging skill. Unskilled players will see only the random forage on their first try. This means they collect whatever they can get but can’t specify the type of item.  As they gain a bit more skill, they begin to unlock more buttons which allow them to search for specific things.

After clicking the forage button, the available choices will appear. After choosing and clicking, an animation will play and the item will appear in the inventory.  We searched for a “looking on the ground” animation but didn’t find one so made one ourselves with our Xbox Kinect and some software, Cinema Mocap, which allowed us to record our motions and apply it directly to the Unity character. Ryan then blended this with the pick up animation and I think it looks pretty good! A far cry from games I have played where you stand perfectly still while you forage.

The UI is an example and not the one we will be using. Dennis is now knee deep in Unity’s fabulous new UI system.  The icons as well are just stand-ins. We will start making icons later this week.

This is the video! We need to start a Youtube channel, huh? 🙂
http://www.screencast.com/t/9e0XEJzLUw

He is showing you the forage skill as well as the new inventory system. Certain items will stack and you can destroy/drop directly from the inventory. More features will be added to support clothing/armor as well as more skills. The next skill for Ryan is cooking!  A very original recipe system will be created. I think you will like it.

Here are a few more pictures. I am in the process of laying road, with Thom’s help, of course.

Enjoy and we will have some more for you later in the week.

Tattoos and more!

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday season!  Ours was wonderful, full of family and friends, parties and quite reflection.  Of course, as usual, I am glad it is over and we can back to our work. 🙂

Today I want to share some tattoo pictures with you.  First of all, I want to introduce you to Thom. Thom is our first controllable character and he is running around the terrain checking things out.

ScreenShot1490

ScreenShot1488

He left the valley and visited the high forests. While there, he ran into a Dalmite woman.

ScreenShot1492

She seemed friendly enough, not armed, and not even really clothed. But she did display some lovely tattoos. By the way, the underwear is a stand in for some Dalmite-appropriate clothing, which hopefully will come soon.  I needed something that would show off the tattoos and not cover them and the underwear, which is a simple overlay was available.

ScreenShot1496

These particular tattoos are simple examples of what we plan to do.

ScreenShot1500

Dalmites display tattoos that identify their patron god/goddess, their tribe and their clan. They also use the tattoos to hide better in the woods by creating lovely vertical lines of vines down their arms and legs.  When the Salans encountered their first Dalmites while exploring their new land, they nick named them the Green People, due to their tattoos.

We will be creating tattoos for each of the 5 Dalmite tribes as well as for each of the gods and goddesses. During character creation, if a player chooses a Dalmite they will also choose their god/goddess and their tribe after reading a bit of lore.  Leg and arms vines will also be available and players can choose from several types. Clan tattoos are usually displayed on the outside of the hand.  Dalmites greet each other by holding out their hands, palms up to show they have no weapon and mean no harm. They then turn over their hand to identify their clan. Dalmites without clan tattoos are considered suspicious since clans are a very integral part of a Dalmite’s life.

Clan tattoos will be given out after the player enters the game. This way, players can form their own clans and even design their own tattoos.  Submitted tattoos will then be available to clan members.

We have two artists who will begin the process of improving what you see here and making beautiful custom tattoos. I will post their progress starting this week, hopefully.

In the meantime, our programmers have also been hard at work.

Ryan has been making our skills and an inventory system to go with them. He has added animations to the foraging skill and tomorrow we will tweak our mocap animation for “search” to add to the skill.  Next he will tackle cooking and recipes.

Inventory ScreenShot_1

Here is a screenshot of what he is working on. The inventory is currently storing example icons for leaves, berries, kindling, and other foraged items.  He works in a prototype environment, which is faster without all the terrain and fancy lighting. 🙂  Don’t worry, our trees don’t look like that.

Dennis has been working on the foundations of our game. Character creation has been a huge challenge.  The Unity character system is relatively new and not well documented so both he and I have wandered through it for months now and are finally making significant progress. Not only have I gotten tattoos to work (Yay!) but am building a nice bunch of working clothes and hair.  Dennis has the hard part, getting all the bits and pieces to work so that when you log into the game, you can quickly create a unique character and enter the world.

^D27A61BDD45D6C28E900D72CCBC7C1787E0C917B60A263AA7C^pimgpsh_fullsize_distr

Here is an example of an NPC creator that we will use to build interesting NPCs that can make the world come alive. It looks like Helga, a well endowed Taran maiden is being featured tonight.  Don’t let that beautiful face fool you, Helga is feisty!  The picture in the corner can show us the LOD models for the characters so we can make sure that any decimation of the close up model doesn’t look bad at the viewing distance of the camera. We can also change body and face features to make every character unique. The hair is not my favorite but looks sufficiently scraggly for Helga. We have some that will work much better for your characters, of course. 🙂

Some of the features in the NPC creator will show up in the character creator for the players, such as the body/face sliders. The Character Creator window is much prettier and I will try get a screenshot for my next update if it is ready.

^EB672E949EDED99EF30BD51FC7426D4A8B50B1A5CA356E4776^pimgpsh_fullsize_distr

Here is an icon of Helga’s maiden wreath. Icons will be used in our inventory system so you can easily identify what clothing you have and what you would like to put on your character. Tooltips will give you more information about the item, such as a qualitative description of the item and/or it’s use.

Here is another picture of the NPC creator with a different character.

NPCCreator

Enough for now but I will try to update when we have something new to show you.  Thanks for stopping by and please feel free to comment. It always helps motivate us to hear from you.

Happy Holidays!

I just wanted to stop by on Christmas Eve to wish all of you a happy holiday and a fantastic New Year from all of us at Watre games and the Legends of Aryiure team.

I have a little fun screen shot below.  This was taken in-game and the only alteration I made was to turn down the brightness a bit.

Overly bright Nicholas, a happy go lucky Salan sage is bringing tattoos as a gift to the tattoo-less Seva the Dalmite.  Stay tune and hopefully she will be tattooed by the New Year!

Enjoy!!!

More pictures of the terrain….

I have been playing with the terrain a bit more, getting ready to add roads.  The package I am using to build the roads was recently updated and I wanted that particular update before I started. It will make things much easier. 🙂

Anyway, I took some pictures, played with sun flares, and added a wheat field just to see how it looks. Thought I might share some pictures.

The wheat field..with a view of the hills beyond.

ScreenShot1456

I played with sun flares, maybe a bit too enthusiastically but they are pretty!

ScreenShot1454 ScreenShot1453 ScreenShot1452

The forest, with ground cover and berry bushes. This will go with our foraging skill currently being prepared.

ScreenShot1451

One thing that is lovely about handcrafted terrains is that I get to create little spots where nature’s beauty can be displayed. I love the twisted trees on this rocky hillside.

ScreenShot1443 ScreenShot1442

A lovely spot in the woods, long shadows, and blue skies.

ScreenShot1436

Hope you enjoyed an afternoon in the woods…and wheat field. 🙂

I will post more as I build the roads/paths in the game so you can see the progress.

Character Creation

We have been working on character creation and fine tuning some of the values to make each culture slightly unique.  Players will enter a small house where they can design their character the way they like him or her.  Sliders allow you to change everything from height, weight, leg and arm width, muscle mass, facial features (cheeks, jaw, chin, eyes, etc.) and many more. You can truly make your own unique character.  You can also change the skin tone based a series of presets, hair and eye color.  Clothing color can also be changed, at least the clothes you start the game wearing. After that, you will have to dye your own clothing or pay someone to do it for you.

Below is a scene similar to what we will be using in game. We will probably be tweaking it and making changes as we go along.  Also, with the release of Unity 5.0, physically based rendering will be available to us so the graphics will increase in quality for those of you whose graphics cards are capable of using the new features. For the rest of you, as you can see, the graphics are still quite nice.  What you cannot see in the picture is the animations, including the idling of the character, smoke twirling up toward the rafters, and the flames of the fire and candle. Light streams in through a window you cannot see in the scene.

ScreenShot1408

Click on picture to see a larger version.  This was taken in the engine using the lighting, animation, particle effects, and props that will be available in the game.  The interior of the house is typical of what you might see in a Bloodland home.  The young lady is wearing a dress that will also be available.  She has been created using the sliders and options available in our character creation system.

As soon as we have the scene set up and a few more clothing options, we will be asking people to test the character creation set up and give us your thoughts on how well it works and if there are any changes needed.  This probably won’t happen until after the holidays as this time of year is busy for everyone but I will be posting on the forums asking for people probably within the next month.

I have spent some time playing around with the options for characters and below is a picture of a tattoo I made for testing. It is a simple tattoo…I call it a scribble tattoo since I just scribbled something on a transparent layer over a face skin to test in the system.  I guarantee my artists can do much better. 🙂

Screen Shot 12-11-14 at 08.33 PM

This character was made in a testing scene for Unity, not in our own game. The lighting is not optimized and of course, we won’t have purple or green hair in the game. I thought you would enjoy a picture that illustrated what we can do with transparent layers. Not only can we easily add tattoos, but also scars, freckles, moles, and other skin variations.

Screen Shot 11-30-14 at 04.44 PM

Here is another you might like. It shows 5 of our cultures and you can see the variety we can get with our system.  From left to right you can see female characters from Sala, Taran Lands, Sakoia, Dalmite, and Drulon.  Heights and weights are exaggerated a bit here to show what we can do.  While some cultures are usually taller than others, the difference will not be so great as you see here.  I will work on a set of men as well for those of you who prefer the more manly physique. 🙂  Sorry about the underwear but until I have some decent Dalmite and Drulon clothing, I decided to show them in underwear. Also, these skins are not final. I am not completely happy with them so waiting on some new ones to be finished.  We will also have more variety of hair soon so I will make some shots for you then as well.  The Aethans will be coming as well as a Bloodland couple.

A few close ups of the cultural ladies here:

Screen Shot 11-29-14 at 08.21 PM 002 Screen Shot 11-29-14 at 08.21 PM 001 SakoianFemale2

Again, these are not in-game, but are in a Unity testing area. Lighting is not optimized. It does show you the variety in facial features, slanted eyes, high cheekbones, small or large chins, and skin coloring.

Hope you enjoyed seeing some of our character creation ideas! I will update with some men soon.  Sorry this took so long but we ran into some issues. Fortunately, we were able to work them out, given time and perseverance.

I will try to post again before the holidays but if not, I hope every has a wonderful Holiday and a Happy New Year!

Update and More Concept Art

Hello,

Yes, I promised more info on character creation but we had a wee problem. Some changes made to the character system in Unity have caused character creation issues, mainly the newly customized characters are being replaced by the base characters. So we have some work to do. I have a programmer on it so hopefully it won’t be too difficult to fix. It might mean redoing the character customization system but that shouldn’t be too bad although it might take a little time.

As a consolation, I have a few more concept art pictures for you.

Here is a beautiful Sakoian dancer by Aynsley.

dancer

She also made us a Taran Explorer.

taran_merged_2

And Kerensa has a Tarian Shield Maiden for us.

Tarian Shield Maiden

I think both girls did a great job of capturing the various cultures. We have several more to go though. My goal is to have a picture for each gender of each culture. 🙂

Enjoy! Feel free to let me know what you would like to see next, whether concept art or another aspect of the game.

Dalmite Concept Art and a brief update

Hi everyone!

I have been so busy with so many things. Recently, I started modeling houses in Maya LT and will have some pictures for you soon.  We finally have characters working and running around on the server which were built and customized by us. So you can change the size of everything almost, including your feet!  I will have an update on that soon with some screenshots.

In the meantime, I want to tell you about a young artist, Kerensa Trevillyan, who is doing concept art for us. Her Dalmite picture was selected to be featured on the Deviant Art group True Amazons, Inspirationally Strong Women in the original character section. Quite an honor!

http://true-amazons.deviantart.com/art/Dalmite-490608831

I have posted the link instead of the picture so you can see the other great pictures in the gallery by other artists. I think our Dalmite fits in well there. 🙂 Check out her other artwork on her Deviant Art page as well. She is very talented for such a young lady.

I can’t wait to see more of her art for Legends of Aryiure and will be sure to share them here. She says her next piece will be a Sakoian.

Next update will be some character creation screens and maybe one of my houses!
