Drulon Swamp, a place of great mystery, and great dangers. Hope you like it. It is not finished yet but wanted to show you some pictures.  Still needs more vegetation, better lighting and some alligators in that swamp. 🙂

Future Updates

Hello everyone,

I am going to be making more frequent updates, no matter how small. So for those of you on the LoA list, you will not be getting an email every time I update. I will send out an announcement once a month for regular updates. If you want to be informed every time I update, I suggest you subscribe to this blog. 🙂

Today I have a few more screenshots with grass added to the terrain.

ScreenShot1934 ScreenShot1933 ScreenShot1931 ScreenShot1930 ScreenShot1929

Grass is animated to wave in the wind and looks quite nice during game play. Since the village’s location is in a meadow environment, I have concentrated on grasses and meadow plants in this area plus the forest areas.  Trees still need to be replaced with more variety.

I am in the middle of a swamp area that will contain different plants and trees. I think you will like this, especially if you enjoy the Drulon culture.

I will update with some pictures when the swamp area is done.

Hope you enjoyed this little update!

Back with more updates!

Sorry about the lack of updates, but we have been busy with numerous things the past month, including remodeling our house for a refinancing assessment. I continued to work as did Ryan but didn’t have a lot to show you until recently.  Last week, we attended a Unity Roadshow about an hour from home. It was very interesting and we learned about some of the new Unity features to come. A new update was recently released with the beginnings of the new Unity networking system, which will be a great asset to our project. Right now, it will work well for testing some of our features but in the future, they will add what we need for a full MMO.  It is easy to use, or so they say, works with Unity of course, and includes physics which will be fun to use. I suspect the more advanced features will becoming out about the time we need them so time-wise, this works well for us.

We added a new programmer who will be working on a special project for us that I am sure you will enjoy. I am going to keep this under wraps for now but will reveal at a later date.

Ryan is busy with the skill system, setting up the formulas for skill acquisition and leveling as well as categorizing all our skills based on difficulty.  Some skills, such as a basic skill like lighting a fire, will be easy to learn. While others, like another language will be much more difficult and take more time to learn.  He is also calculating depreciation factors, so some skills become rusty if you don’t use them for a while while others are more difficult to forget.  We want players to “depend” on each other to some extent, since this is a role playing game and emphasizes community.  If every player has every skill, then it sort of defeats the purpose. Might as well play a single player game then. 🙂

The combat system is coming along fine.  We even have large scale battles although they are going to require load testing.  We are discussing ways to make this work within in our system and will give you a demonstration when it is ready. This is a long term project though since individual combat with other players and NPCs is more important in the short term. We want players to be able to test the combat with NPC’s and animals first.

Dennis was away for a month but is back and working on the database again. He is also putting the final touches on a character system we can use for testing.  We were delayed as UMA was updated and required a complete rewrite of what we already have.  UMA is the Unity system we are using for our characters. They will allow you to fully customize your character, in body and facial shapes as well as clothing.  The updates are beautiful, with PBR shading.  I think you will be pleased.  Currently, UMA 2 has some bugs but hopefully that will be resolved soon.

I have been building houses and testing out terrain. We are hoping to add software soon that will allow for procedural generated terrain, speeding up the creation of terrain and making it very easy to create the rest of the world’s map when we are ready to do. So far, the screenshots are very impressive.

Some other news includes player building. We plan on very soon being able to allow players to place claims for land where they can build their own house. At the moment, we are not entirely happy with the piece by piece type of house building as it has a lot of limitations and play to create a system where you add a base house and then can add extensions to the house, including decorative exterior items such as balconies, trim, etc.  It allows players some customization but still keeps the buildings within the context of the lore.  Interiors can be decorated as well with numerous items, furniture and storage areas.

I will start posting some of the housing builds for the Bloodlands soon. I may also add a few for Caeril so you can see the difference.  Cultural housing will also be added to the Caeril enclaves.  I am eager to show you what we are planning for those areas. 🙂

Here is an example of a building I am creating. This is simply an example. It is made from modular parts so the house can be assembled in anyway. This one happens to be a market house but remember, it is modular.  Using a modular method, one can build a simple house while still low skilled at building and lacking money for a better house. They can then add on to the house until they have a huge fancy mansion, if they wish. 🙂  One could end up with a sprawling house or castle.  The following picture is in a medieval style, suitable for parts of the Bloodlands and Sala.  It was taken in Unity, not in the game environment (too busy for building) and is not entirely finished yet. But I thought you might enjoy it.

ScreenShot1924

Here is another one, using the same system in our game environment. I did not build this house but was testing it in-game.

ScreenShot1914

I think you can see the possibilities. 🙂  Of course, modular pieces for the different cultural styles will be added.

Soon, I will add some interior scenes as well. I have a level designer who is eager to get her hands on those so can’t wait to see what she does with them.

Finally, I have been working on a market area for the starting village as well as playing with some NPCs and animations. These are not the characters we will be using but are good stand-ins for now.  The market will allow anyone to rent a booth as long as it is not being used. So when not used, an NPC will man the booth with all his/her goods. But when a player wishes to use it, they can click on the booth, rent, and the NPC’s good will be gone. Players can display their own items if they wish or use a sample set of market items to represent what they have for sale. A market in a village of the Bloodlands will look very different from one in Caeril or Sakoia of course.

Hope you enjoyed this update. I hope the next one you see is a skill in action or maybe the new characters.

Thanks!

Archaaz is fine!

He contacted us today through our old developer list. He is helping out at the monastery where he is staying.  I am glad he is there for the people who need him and I hope he stays safe.

I guess we have another Archaaz adventure to share now…along with the snake, and the dog….and probably things I have forgotten. 🙂

Earthquake in Nepal

My heart goes out to the people of Nepal and surrounding countries who were hit by a devastating earthquake today.

However, the team at Legends of Aryiure has also been affected. One of our team members, also a former Adellion team member, is in Nepal at the moment studying.  I have no idea if he is okay or not but please send out healing thoughts to Archaaz, a valued member of our team and a friend. If you pray, pray for him. If not, think of him and the others who are struggling in this difficult situation.

And Archaaz, if you read this, let us all know if you are okay. I am sure that with your skills, you will be busy helping the people of the area. I hope you are safe!

I am sure that it will be a while before very much information comes out of the area but we will all keep Archaaz and the people of Nepal in our thoughts.

Environmental Pictures

Unfortunately, the video I promised will be delayed. We had car issues this week, basically a break down and all the time it takes to sort everything out.  We will be unable to work on it this weekend, which is why I wanted to get it out before..but best laid plans, you know. 🙂  I will try to have something out by the end of next week, if life doesn’t throw another wrench into the plan.

However, I have some more pretty pictures for you as a consolation prize.

Work, work, work!

Hello,

While it has been a while since my last post, this does not mean we haven’t been working. Unity 5 required quite a few updates and while most of them went smoothly, there were a few issues.  Our entire project had to be ported over and while Unity automatically upgraded the code, it wasn’t perfect. Some things had to be handled differently and some things broke. Since my terrain is in 16 chunks, I had to put each chunk back together again and get them back in sync so I could continue to modify the terrain. It was a very tedious job!  The results were worth it!

Then there was Speedtree. I purchased the software to make my own trees since the same tree in the forest over and over again just isn’t perfect enough for me. 🙂 I found that making new trees from the originals was not hard, but I was getting artifacts, especially in certain trees. I did find a way around this and have an entire crop of white oaks, other hardwoods, and some river birch.  I also made my own bushes and our forests will sport some nice blackberry bushes.  The trees look great and the wind movements are very natural.

ScreenShot1661

Ground cover has not yet been added but is my next job. 🙂

You have seen this mill before but here it is with some Speedtree plants.

ScreenShot1651

During this last week, I have been trying to put a day-night cycle into the game.  This is a very important part of our development because it makes the world truly come alive.  I had issues with the terrain not responding correctly to the light so had to do some backtracking. This means I have put back all the new trees but at least I have now have time in our game!  We can set the length of days, nights, intensity of the light, colors of the light, etc.  Here are a couple of pictures.

Morning has broken…my favorite.

Ryan and I will be making a nice long video which will show off the terrain and the day-night cycle. We will be adding some NPCs with animations, fireflies in the forest, and some other particle effects triggered by the time of day. We will also add some audio effects.  It might take us a few days to get it done, but will do our best.

In other news, Dennis is putting characters in the game using our character creation system and working on completing the database.

Ryan has been swamped with college classes but has already made a few particles for us and will continue his work on the combat system and skills in about a month, when he finishes school.  He continues his Computer Science BA next fall after graduating this spring with his AA.  He has won all sorts of academic awards and has been chosen as part of the Florida Academic team, one among 124 students selected colleges all over the state.  Nice to have such a smart fellow on the team, huh! Let’s see what he does this summer. He has promised to work full time for us.

Hope you enjoyed this little update.

Unity 5 Released!

Hi everyone!

Wish I had some cool stuff to show you but I have been busy getting ready for Unity 5!

Here is the show real from yesterday’s GDC announcement. I thought you would like to see what Unity 5 is capable of doing.

What does all of this mean for us? Well, first of all, I am converting our game over to Unity 5. This is a big job because so much changed with this new version. We have new physics, new PBR shaders and real-time lighting, a 64 bit editor, SpeedTrees and much better optimization.  I can’t wait to get it set up to show you some new pictures.

In the meantime, here are a few simple screenshots. One is of a church of Adel that I made in Maya. This simple country church is of brick and has four stained glass windows, custom made for us by one of our artists. Notice the flame, a common symbol of Adel, the god of Light.  All of Adel’s church have a common architecture, with a round sanctuary where a flame will always burn to the rectangular entrance way and the gold painted roofed dome. Churches in bigger towns will be fancier than this one with more elaborate stone and arches.  This one has two buttresses on each side of the circular area.

ScreenShot1614

I have also added a dock to the area near the mill. This will be expanded a bit but thought I would share what I have now.

ScreenShot1611

Now, in a few days I will test these with the new PBR shaders and we will see the difference. It is a lot of work since every texture map will need to be replaced and since many of mine were made by me, I will have to build the various maps needed by the shaders.

So, just a little update but just so you know we are working hard to convert our game to the new Unity version. I think you will be please. 🙂 Be patient with us though because while the conversion is pretty smooth, there some things that we will need to fix or change.

Thanks!

If you are trying to get to our website or forums…

They are down at the moment with an SQL error. We are attempting to fix them but they will probably be down the rest of today and tomorrow.  We will be updating our website with a new design so may decide to do that now as well. So don’t worry, we did not close up shop, just technical stuff. 🙂

Just to let you know, the sites are up again!  Seems it was an issue with our hosting service and they fixed it before we could even contact them! Yay Bluehost!

PS: Oops, spoke too soon! Down again!

I am waiting for a live chat with a Bluehost service rep. Based on the 10 minute wait, which keeps going up, I am guessing we not the only ones affected.

In the meantime, I will work on my boat dock and a small village church for Adel. Hope to have some screenshots soon! Maybe a video?

Ye Olde Mill

Hi everyone,

I finished something new, an old mill that sits along the river. I went in and decorated the terrain a bit around it and thought I would share a picture and a video. The mill and wheel were made by me in Maya LT. I am really enjoying modeling.

2015-02-19_11-56-58

I also made a little video of Thom standing near the mill. I did notice after I made the video that Thom is floating a wee bit above the ground. This is because his collider is not adjusted properly, my fault. He is my test character controller so I haven’t take a lot of time to make him look perfect. Since he is just a stand-in, I wasn’t all that concerned. I plan to make some better looking, not so outrageously buff characters in the near future. So forgive me, and Thom and enjoy the video.

Feel free to suggest new videos. I will put them on a list and make them as I add new content. 🙂
