Player Housing

Hello!

I am gathering the pieces to show you our player housing system and it is taking longer than usual, of course. I am also testing a new terrain tool that is awesome so that is taking some of my time.

When you put both of those together, you realize that some new interesting ideas come out of the merger and just tonight, we had a fresh idea to try regarding player’s land in-game.

Players will have the chance to purchase land and build houses or fields or even pasture land on their own land.  First, the player will find an area to built their little homestead and they can claim this land by placing a house or a field or two, or three.  In most places, land will cost in-game currency and that cost will be determined by the size of the plot or the location of the plot. Prime locations near cities will cost more than a tiny plot in the wilderness, where the only cost might be the time to clear the land.  There will be restrictions on how many plots a player may buy in order to make sure everyone has their own little piece of the world. Players may also rent land or houses to other players in exchange for in-game currency.

In cities, things will work a little differently. Within the walls, the houses will be pre-built in order to keep the city’s architecture uniform and within the guidelines of the culture for visual appeal. Players can buy house to use as their city living quarters or they can rent out city housing they own to other players. Caeril will have several districts, some unique to the various cultures, others for official buildings, and some areas for shops. Be careful when walking through the dark alleys in the slummiest parts of town. Other towns and cities will also have unique areas behind their walls.

Our goal at the moment is to finish the system that will allow players to select and build their houses.  Each house will require a certain amount of resources, collected or purchased in-game.  A player character must have the skills needed to build at least the most basic shelter and more advanced skills for better houses, shops, or municipal buildings.  A player whose character does not have the skills needed can hire another player to build the house for them.  Houses will take time to build and won’t happen overnight.  Each part of the house is built and then the finished materials are put together for the final house. This encourages cooperation and it may be common to see friends joining together to raise a barn or build house for their neighbor.

We are also working on a system to allow you to add on to your house, even if it is finished. Your family grows out of your little hovel?  You can add a loft for the little ones. Business is going well and you want to show your new status? Add on a room or two.

If farming is your style, you can own one or several fields. Each field can grow a variety of crops but make sure you rotate your grains with a season of hay to revitalize the soil.  You will see the crops grow and you can harvest your grain to sell or use it to bake bread. Your hay will feed your cattle through the winter season or can be used for bedding in the hen house.

We want you to have your little bit of Aryiure, a place you can gather with friends, rest your character while offline and even plot storylines in the your own private in-game corner.

Now for some pictures. Below is a sample of a Drulon House, the same houses you saw in the swamp video. I have modified the roof a little and added a loft inside.  I will save the interior shots for another post but here is the exterior.

Below is are two fields, one for wheat and the other for hay. A field can change crops each spring during the planting season based on the player’s preferences and the condition of the soil. Farmers need to tend their garden well to get the maximum yield.  These fields are in a fertile valley of the Bloodlands. Some areas will be more suited to different crops.

The fence is your traditional woven fence and you can make the fence by gathering wood and using your woodcrafting skills.  Remember, everything in LoA can be built by your character.

I had hope to show you the house placement system tonight but decided to wait until we could get it working to place fields as well.

Other news includes our new attribute/vital system which is currently being tested. I think you are going to like it.

I should have some videos of hunting animals, or being hunted, soon. Maybe I will make a new video where the crocodiles actually are scary! 🙂

Enjoy!

Website is up!

I actually finished it last night and took off the maintenance. Those of you on the forums did get the email I sent out yesterday…I know because I have been contacted already by a few people. 🙂

The link is: http://www.legendsofaryiure.com.

Please let me know here or via the contact sheet on the website if you see anything wrong or that needs to be fixed.

Today, I am pruning out old forum posts and refreshing things a bit. No pictures today, unfortunately, due to working on the website for three days straight, but soon!

By the way, discovered I cannot put an external link in the menu here to the website.  I will probably move this site to my server soon. I own the domain teilasblog so that will still be valid. Will keep you all posted.

Brief update…

Still working on the website and it should be up by August 1st as well as an updated forum.

The new improved character system is almost done and combat is coming along nicely.  Currently, Ryan is killing lots of rats. 🙂  He is tying it all into the skill system so it actually means something.

I have a few bits of artwork for you.  First of all, we are bringing the Aethans back. Merchants and pirates, the adventurous Aethans rule the sea.  One of our concept artists has made a picture for us.

This is Alana, a female pirate captain. Her most recent conquest was a Sakoian ship carrying fine silks to Salandorf. Alana couldn’t resist snatching a few for her own personal wardrobe. What girl wouldn’t? 🙂 I am sure we will see Alana round the docks of Caeril attempting to sell her black market goods.

Here are a few more swamp pictures. I have added some moody fog and improved the water.

Enjoy and see you soon!

Laboring on the new website…

Hi everyone,

We are replacing our website with one that will be easier for us to update. The easier it is, the more we will be posting. I love WordPress and it is becoming very popular as a website and our hosting service makes it pretty easy to install one.  Of course, the hard work is setting it up.

So far, if you go to the URL you will see a pretty maintenance page:

http://www.legendsofaryiure.com

Hopefully, it will be a place we can show of galleries of screenshots and artwork, plus keep you updated on the game as a whole. I will keep this as my own blog since I am rather attached to it.  Ryan will have his own blog on the website so you can watch his progress.

I hoping to get the community involved so that we can make the game you really want to play, one that will enhance your role play.

I have no new pictures for you but hopefully a new video soon. I have made some improvements to the swamp and I think you will like it.  I will try for sometime next week. 🙂

Website will go live on August 1st, barring any major issues.

Tonan’s Programming Log #1

Hello everyone, this is Tonan Bora. Otherwise known as “Ryan”.
I am one of Teila’s programmers, and have been working hard on the inventory and skill system for Legends Of Aryiure.  Below is a video log depicting the work in progress. Keep in mind that this is a developer’s video, and nothing shown is in its final state. The main goal of this video is to show everyone that progress is being made.

What I wanted to show off here is the simplistic inventory system, skill system, and crafting system I currently have in place.

In the released game, you will not be able to see your skill levels, nor the experience bar of the skills.  The only reason I created a skill window the way I did, was for debugging purposes and for tracking skills while in game.  The crafting system is going to be much more complex that what is depicted.  In order for me to make that fantastically delicious Apple Pie in the video, I would first need to create a crust, then create the apple filling.  Only then would I be able to combine the filling and crust to create an uncooked Apple Pie, which I would then be able to place in an oven to bake. Only then will you be able to eat the pie and keep your stomach from rumbling.

I have done a number of other things besides inventory and skills.  I have also implemented mass combat between teams of NPCs, helped Teila create her last swamp video by setting up the wild life that you see during her walk as well as make or modify a few smaller scripts for her use.

My next step is to further refine the crafting system to make it more akin to what we want.  When I get a suitable amount done, I shall post another video showing it off!
Now, I am off to enjoy my pie! 🙂

Thanks for the feedback!

I heard from a number of people about the swamp video. Everyone liked it and a few had some great suggestions as well.

The number one suggestion from almost everyone I talked to was that the grass was too long.  I have shortened the grass and plan to redo it a bit early this week.  It was too tall for me as well!

A few people suggested Bandicam for my videos rather than the one I was using and that is a great idea. I will try the trial version on my next video and if it looks better, I will purchase the software.

I also received a few heart felt messages from people who had followed Adellion for many years. One said the thought of Adellion made him sad and I understand this feeling completely. It makes me sad too, the thought that such a fantastic team and so much work came to nothing is sad.  I think that is why the Drulon video touches me so much, and probably those people as well. It is a part of the world that we talked about, read about, and thought about for so long…and to see it come to life was magical.  I know I felt a knot in my throat as I watched the final copy.  It was far from perfect but it “felt” Drulon….I know some of you get that.

In fact, I will probably do the Dalmites last, only because it will be so emotional for me. The Dalmite culture was mine and where Teila originated so it will be hard for me to do it justice…but I will try.

Those of you new to this “world” might not completely understand an emotional connection to a game that didn’t even come out, but we spent 10 years in development, formed friendships, even a couple of marriages, and there are times I miss all that so much. Even now it is not the same.  But I was so happy this week to hear from Johan, who was the lore lead for the Aethan culture. Pirates and sea merchants reigned supreme on Yen Taell, the island home of the Aethans.  I will be adding the island to my list of terrains to make in the future. I remember this was a very popular culture.

I am looking forward to the day when Legends of Aryiure makes people feel happy and hopeful rather than sad.  As I have said before, this is a project of my heart and having all of you follow my progress and share your thoughts with me motivates me so much.

Thanks and people feel free to comment and share the blog with friends.

I have no pictures today, sadly. My hard drive died early this afternoon and the rest of the day was spent installing a new disk.  Fortunately, everything was backed up on our NAS and on our Crashplan Cloud so no losses, thank goodness, other than time. 🙂

Finally, the video!

I had a nice long blog post written last night, or almost written while my video was happily uploading to YouTube. Suddenly, the dreaded Blue Screen of Death appeared, the third time that night.  So, rather than spending time here, I ended up copying over files to our backup server, just in case it was a failing disk. Fortunately, all project and work related files are already backed up but I needed to make sure my personal files and pictures were safe.

Remember, this video is of a game in development so some items may be replaced or expanded for the final version.  The quality in-game is beautiful, but videos go through several stages of compression and I do notice that in low light especially, they can get pixelated.  I am going to see if I can find some better recording and editing software that might help give you a better representation of what you will see in game. The screenshots are much clearer and they are not doctored, so they are what the game looks like. I might upload a build in the near future so you can actually see the quality of the game.

Anyway, I present you with A Walk Through the Swamp.  The video starts at a small Drulon settlement, like so many others in the Drulon Lands. This particular “island” is the largest on the current terrain and has a higher elevation in the middle. Numerous other islands dot the landscape and make perfect places for settlements. Drulons travel between areas using boats of course.  Fish is a very important part of a Drulon’s life and that, along with subsistence farming and hunting some of the local wildlife make up their diet.

You see evidence of this in the village.  Fish and nets hang to dry on poles and inside one of the storage sheds, you see several types of nets. Barrels hold pickled fish and other meat. Houses are simple and on stilts to protect from high waters. Most cooking and other work is done outside.  The elevated platform serves as a place to protect stored items as well as a dry working area.

As we travel around the island, we see some of the local flora and fauna. Trees that border the swamps include the bald cypress, with their knees for stabilization, in the lower ares, firs and poplars higher up the slope and white oaks in the more stable, less wet locations.  Grasses and herbs cover the land.  Among these are important herbs and roots used in medicines and for food.

Fauna includes crocodiles, sunning themselves on the banks, wild boars who enjoy rooting in the long grass, and several species of birds. Look carefully and you will see song birds, a great owl and eagles flying overhead.

While making this video, I had some interesting experiences. I lost the boars, temporarily, and had to run through the long grass, causing me to realize how badly we need paths. I will put those in asap. 🙂  The boars were almost completely hidden by the long grass, making hunting them rather exciting.

I then discovered two spooning crocodiles..how sweet. At one point, an owl swooped down over the water looking for fish, I imagine. Another alligator surprised me by coming out of the brush right at me as I ran. Yikes! I saw eagles flying in front of the sun as it was approaching the horizon.

I had forgotten my torch so when I realized the sun was going down, I had to again cut through the long grass. I knew from exploring in the past that traveling in the swamp at night without a light is scary and you end up either in the swamp, or lost…or worse!  I felt a true sense of relief when I rounded a copse of trees and found the fire burning back at the settlement. Ahhh, home and without any major incidences.

The music and the ambiance, especially the golden light from the setting sun were beautiful and peaceful. I thoroughly enjoyed my romp through the swamp. 🙂

During the next month or so, I will be adding some new things to this area. I will record all of it here so you can share the process. Paths will be laid and a hill fort built on top of the hill, with grass berm sides just like ancient forts should be.  A Drulon flag will wave above the fort. More animals will be added and hopefully I can find a fix to some of the lighting issues that still exist.

Anyway, keep watching please and feel free to comment. The video link is below.  Enjoy!

Still working…

Sorry I didn’t get the update up yet. I have had a computer issue that has to be addressed before I lose data. Everything is backed up but I don’t want to spend my weekend dealing with a failed disk so doing some diagnostics on the hard drives.  It is taking longer than I thought.

I am so close to being done but on the plus side, I might be add some cool stuff to the list that will make a day’s wait worthwhile. 🙂

Here is a little evening present for you to tide you over until tomorrow. This is the Drulon swamp at night with a new star field. I love this picture but then I am a bit of a night owl. Hmm, maybe I should add an owl to the swamp. 😉  Be sure to click on this screenshot and make a little larger. It is worth it.

NightSwampUntil tomorrow!  Enjoy.

Your Banner Ideas!

After posting our artist’s banner, we decided it might be fun to ask people to post their own ideas for banners or even their own artwork.

This is for fun and we won’t use your work without permission so go for it, and post something lovely, meaningful or just silly and quirky.  Don’t worry about the art, just go for it.

Post your ideas/artwork in the comments below.

To start it off, my idea….A banner showing a close up of different noses created by our character creation process. And above that would be this: Which nose do you want?

I thought about Which nose will you pick….but my son vetoed that one! 🙂

Have fun!

Whose shoes will you wear?

I am going to try to get something more than pretty screenshots up for July 1st. Forgive me if I am a few days late but I will certainly try. 🙂

On August 1st, we will be replacing our old outdated website with a new website.

In honor of the new website, we are currently making a series of banners which illustrate an important theme of our game, making your own choices in the game, whether that be the type of character you choose, the skills you pick, the way you customize your characters face and clothing, and various other ways to create your own experiences.

Unlike other games, where you kill the same monster as everyone else or solve the great quest just like everyone else, in LoA, you will make your own stories, through role play and game mechanics.  Each player’s experiences will be different, sometimes vastly different.

Here is our first banner, created by one of our artists:The website URL has still not been added and it needs a little more polish, but I wanted to share. Watch for a series of similar banners.  I think they really illustrate what we are trying to accomplish.

ShoesBanner_larger

Enjoy and let us know what you think through the comments!  And consider…whose shoes will walk in when you play LoA?
